Wonderful Memories

Retta Thompson was a former resident of the T Eaton Co. house, currently located at the Kindersley and District Plains Museum, donated by herself and her sister May. She recently donated original artifacts from the house including an alarm clock and photograph of her father, Mr. Johnston Hill. In 1918 the precut lumber for the house was sent from British Columbia to Pinkham, Saskatchewan by rail. It was then brought to Zilda and Johnston Hill’s farm site by horse and wagon (6 miles northwest of Eatonia). The lumber cost $970 with an additional $750 for building materials. Included in the structure was a coal furnace and electric lighting. This pushed the total cost to around $2000. (Catalogue Houses-Eaton’s and Others) The house was built quickly by neighbors from close by and the family. It had a full basement with stone walls and a dirt floor. In 1940, the original siding was changed to a brick style.
Christmas of 1918 was celebrated in the Eaton’s house. Retta said that they always had company around. Her mother hired help until her brother Ruben was old enough to manage the farm and he spent the rest of his life there. She went to school in the area, with her siblings. The school was on their land, so it was only about a mile away. The kids would usually walk, but sometimes Retta’s friend would pick her up on her horse. Although the time was hard during the depression, they were always well fed and well cared for. She shared many happy memories in the house and it was a meeting place for everyone in the area. They used to play cards and visit with friends and family. On Thursday nights they would play old time music on the radio from Calgary, Alberta. Furniture was shuffled to the side to make room for dancing. This way the kids could practice for their school dances on Fridays. Retta enjoys visiting the museum and looking out the windows, reminiscing about the past. She still resides in the Kindersley area and now has a family of her own including 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
The Eaton’s house was built 100 years ago and still stands as it was built. More information about Retta’s home and others like it can be found inside the books “A Past to Cherish” (at the Museum) and “Catalogue Houses-Eaton’s’ and Others”.
Make sure to check out the Eaton’s house and the rest of Kindersley’s heritage at the Kindersley and District Plains Museum! Guaranteed you will meet wonderful people and enjoy learning many new things!

Marco, the Museum Cat!

Marco the cat was hiding. I thought he had escaped and so did Anna. He was inside until we got the cat house area fixed so he could not escape.

We looked for him, called him and he finally decided to grace us with a look. We caught him and took back to his outside home.

Contest Time

Hello Everyone,
There is a contest happening here at the Tourist Centre. Check the poster for the details. We have put up posters around town.

Peace on a Backroad

Yesterday I chose to travel the back road to town. There are days I just do not feel like dealing with highway traffic.

As I drove the back road (at the speed limit) farmers waved at me as I went by. The sun was shining and the views were beautiful. It thought about stopping and taking a picture. I decided not to ruin the sense peace and enjoyment I was having at that moment and continued on my way.

Today I did not get to take the back road as my car does not do great on wet gravel roads. I took the already busy highway and it did not have the same feel.

Have safe travels and from time to time take a back road.

Driving Past Fields

The morning started out beautifully. A time to be working on my flower beds before work.

As I drove to work this morning the fields along the highway looked amazing. The bright yellow under the blue sky that stretched far into the distance was glowing in the sun. The green fields moving in the light breeze looked like waves in a green ocean. What a gorgeous sight to see at the start of the day.

My only regret is, due to time constraints, I was unable to get pictures. Have a great day!

Canada Day Success!

Canada Day was a success! We had over 500 people of all ages attend our celebration! We had a wonderful flag raising ceremony put on by the RCMP, Kindersley Legion, and the Air Cadets. Afterwards, we had cake, cupcakes, food, ice cream and refreshments. A folk band played in the main banquet area. There were activities for youth such as decorating travel journals, pin the tail on the beaver, and scavenger hunts. Outside there were wagon rides and tractor rides. Throughout the day many people toured the museum. To top the day off, there were fireworks just off Thompson Drive. What a great celebration!

Thank You West Central Abilities

We received a beautiful card from West Central Abilities for hosting their picnic on a rainy day! The Kindersley Museum and Tourism Centre was happy to have you!

Where is this school?

The construction on the one room school was started in 1909 after the post office was named and a store opened. The Merrington School opened in 1911. The coat rooms for the girls and boys were near the door. I remember the coat rooms being a separate room at the back of my class though not a one room school.

Check out the lunch tins they used to use. What do you think of them? What books would interest you that are in or on the desks? Would you like a drawer under your seat to store your things?

How would you like to travel to school in the winter in this School Van?

In answer to the first question, the Kindersley Museum of course!

Our Past, Our Present and Our Future

As I travelled through Europe on my study tour in May I began to ponder our country, Canada. We are a young country and after starting work at the Tourist Centre in Kindersley it has really brought home how important it is to preserve our history. The past is a learning tool that we can use to make changes for today that can create a better future as a people and as a country.

From the past comes our Future!

It is important to share our stories with those that are young, to document those stories and to create an interest in those stories. Growing up I never questioned our family history and it was never really talked about. Where did we come from, when and why did we come to Canada? Those stories are harder to piece together and some may be lost as the people who know them die.

Share the heritage of your families including why they chose to call Canada home. Write them down. One day when our young people grow up they may realize how their story was shaped by their family’s history and their country.

The museum in Kindersley is a wonderful place to start developing their inquiring minds. For them to look at the past and see how it can blend with the present and the future. To preserve for future
generations how our country was settled and the challenges faced by everyone to adapt to a new way of life.
Some Canadians left their previous country because they chose to find adventure in a new land, some because of persecution and some because they wished to have a better life.

Bring your children to the Kindersley Tourist Centre at the Kindersley Museum to start their adventure on discovering their past, present and future!

A Blast to the Past

What memories do you have of your summer vacations growing up?

One of mine is the drive-in theatre.

While staying at the small man-made lake near Kyle called Clearwater Lake we discovered a drive-in theatre that was still being used during the summer. It brought back memories of being a kid and as a family venturing off to the drive-in. When there are six kids it is more affordable.

After entering the drive-in my children took off to play on the merry-go-round and run around until the movie started. The first time my children saw Mulan was on the big screen at the Clearwater Drive-in. Watching my children run around brought back many great memories and some not so great memories. I get motion sickness and really should have stayed off the merry-go-round as even my siblings were mean and would not stop and let me off. Brothers and sisters…. Needless to say it was the last time at a drive-in that I went on anything that went around and around and around.

The Clearwater Drive-in was built in 1957 and is 2 miles north of Kyle on highway 4 and then ½ mile east on highway 342.

Looking for something different to do this summer while staying in Kindersley? Take your children or grandchildren on an adventure to see a movie at the drive-in. Check out the movie listings and dates at www.clearwaterdrivein.com. Take a step back in time and remember the many different adventures that were had at drive-in movies. The all night horror shows and ………. What are your memories?

The Sun Is Shining

A beautiful blue sky is framing the Canada flag outside The Kindersley Museum

My day started with some fog at 5:30 am. The sun came out and burned off the fog while I sat having a cup or two of coffee. A nice way to start my morning before going Day Trippin' with you.

The highway is busy this morning with all types of vehicles. Some of the vehicles are going on holidays, some are going to work and some are just taking a day trip.

Wherever you are going, I wish you safe travels and a great day!

Here is a little sunshine in a planter to brighten your day.
